HOW A SAMARITAN SAVED A SINNER – Luke 10:29-37
Introduction:  Jesus is presented as God.  Only the fool denies there is a God.
1.  Where did God come from?  God hasn’t been anywhere to come from.
2.  Teacher – “If anybody can tell me where God is, I’ll give them this apple.”  A
little boy raised his hand and said, “Teacher, if you’ll tell me where God ain’t,
I’ll give you a whole bushel of apples.”
3.  Jesus Christ is presented as God but He didn’t have to get here to be here.  He
was here before He ever got here.  He is, and was, and will always be the
Eternal Son of God.  He left the bosom of a Father to the bosom of a mother
that you and I might leave the bosom of a mother and go to the bosom of the
    Father.
4.  Jesus Christ as the Son of God had an Heavenly Father but as the Son of Man,
    he had an earthly mother.
5.  Ezek. 1:10 – Four faces of a man, lion, ox, and eagle.  Jesus is presented in the
first four books of the N.T. and Rev. 4 have the same features but not in the
same order.  First beast is the lion; calf; man; and eagle.  Why are they
different?  If the men who put the Bible together; they would have put Luke
first, Matthew – lion, Mark, man, John – Eagle.
6.  Revelation – Lion is first – When Jesus comes back He’s not coming back as a
baby but as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
7.  Matthew – Lion of tribe of Judah – All the priests in O.T. they came of Levi.
Hebrews – Melchizidek – without Father or mother.  As the Son of God, He had
a father but not mother.  As the Son of Man, He had a mother but no Father.  <
Melchizedek received His priesthood from no one and passed it on to no one so
did Jesus.  He is the last of the High Priests.
I.  THE PARABLE
    A.  Definition – A parable never mentions a Person by Name – Luke 16 –
Lazarus.  That is not a parable but a true story.
        1.  Don’t’ ever build a doctrine of a parable or a type – It will break down
somewhere.  There is no recorded sin against Joseph or Daniel but “all
have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
        2.  A parable is an Earthly story with a Heavenly meaning.  A parable is not
the house but it is the porch to the house.  A parable is not the house but it
is a window in the house to let the light shine through so the subject may
be more clearly seen.  You can preach around the world on everything but
if you don’t get to Jesus Christ you have missed what God wanted to let
            the people see.
        3.  There are 38 parables in the N.T.  Everyone never mentions a person by
            name.
    B.  Doctrine – Vs. 25 – “…a certain lawyer stood up and tempted him, saying,
Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
        1.  Vs. 25 – Don’t get anything from God by referring to Jesus as a “Good
Master.”  Nicodemus called Him, “rabbi.”  You can’t anything from God
by “doing” anything to inherit life.
II.  THE PHILOSOPHIES – Vs. 30-33
    A.  The Philosophy of The Thieves – “What’s thine is mine and we’ll take
it.”  Some people think the world owes them a living.  Steal and cheat from
        everyone.
    B.  The Philosophy of the Priest and Levite – “What’s mine is mine and I’ll
keep it.”  Some people will not talk back to you while you’re preaching but
they’ll go home and they’ll have “roast preacher.”  Preach on tithing –
“What’s mine is mine and I’ll keep it.”  Same as the priest and the Levite.
        1.  Save up for a rainy day.  O.K., it’ll come.  I’d rather give 10% to the work
of God than give it to the doctors and drug stores.
        2.  Some are in the hospital, getting their tithe cut out.  A preacher doesn’t
preach on tithing for himself but so you’ll recognize that God has
            ownership of everything you have.
    C.  The Philosophy of the Samaritan – “What’s mine is thine and I’ll give.”
It’s wonderful to be on the giving end than the receiving end.
III.  THE PICTURES
    A.  A Sinner Descending
        1.  Certain man – Represents Adam.  Inherited sin.  Sinner by birth, by
nature.  Men go to hell not because what they’ve done but because of what
they are in Adam.  You didn’t do anything to get lost and neither do you
            do  anything to get saved.
        2.  Certain man went down – Adam was cast out of Paradise.
            a.  The Socialists say, “Men need a better environment.”  You can take a
hog out of a hog lot, put him into the bathtub, paint his toe nails, put a
ribbon around his neck and put Right Guard under his shoulders and
hams.  Put him in the house and he’ll stay there for a little while because
you’ve reformed him.  First day it rains and he looks out the window,
he’ll make a bee line for the nearest mud hole.
            b.  Man is not sick and needs at tonic.  He’s not leaning over and needs
something to prop on.  Man is dead and needs a resurrection.  I am a
sinner because my daddy was a sinner.  Adam left paradise and went to
                a briar patch.
    B.  A Sinner Robbed – Description of the Sinner before Christ finds him.
        1.  You didn’t find the Lord, the Lord found you.  The Lord has never been
lost.  “I found it” stickers all over the U.S.  University of North Carolina
        2.  Robbed – Six miles from Jerusalem to Jericho.  Jericho is right where the
Dead Sea and on the same level.  Jericho is the lowest level is the Dead
Sea. The Highest point sea level wise is Jerusalem.  Here is a man who
went from the Top to the Bottom.
        3.  Jerusalem – Means the city of “peace.”  Jericho means the city of
            “curses.”  II Kings 2.
        4.  These Thieves are like Birds in the Bible – Every time you see “birds” in
the Bible, it always speaks of the agents of the Devil.  The thieves and the
devil himself are “thieves.”  John 10:10 – “The thief cometh not, but for to
steal, and to kill, and to destroy:”
            a.  Abraham built an altar in Gen. 15, placed the sacrifice on the altar, and
the birds came down to steal the sacrifice.  He drove the birds away.
            b.  Matthew 13 – Parable of the Mustard Seed.  Seed grows into a tree and
the birds lodged in the branches.  Mustard seed was the smallest seed
like the widows mite was the smallest coin.  Ecumenical movement
saying, “Let’ss come together.”  If you get in bed with the whole whore,
the only kind of children that can be birthed are illegitimate children.
The very denominations that broke from the Catholic church are getting
right back into bed with her saying, “Get together.”
    C.  A Sinner Wounded – Vs. 30 – Man that is Beaten
        1.  Thieves stole, beat, and left.  Today, the thieves still inhabit that road.
        2.  John 4 – Woman said, how are you going to draw?  Well is 110 feet deep.
The reason there was no bucket was because of the thieves.  You had to
            bring your own bucket.
    D.  A Sinner Rejected
        1.  Vs. 31-32 – Man that is Passed Up.
        2.  Vs. 31 – Priests represent Religion.  Where had this priest been?  He had
been to Jerusalem to worship.  Religion in the Greek means “anything that
            binds you fast.”
            a.  It’s not good enough for God for you to have religion.
            b.  Jesus said the Pharisees were “full of dead men’s bones” – God looks
                from the inside out.
            c.  God does not put a new suit on an old man but he puts a new man in an
                old suit.
        3.  Vs. 32 – Levites represent the Law.  The law was never given to save.
            a.  Rom. 3:19 – The law was given that the whole world might become
guilty.  Gal. 3:24 – “Schoolmaster” to bring us to Christ.
            b.  Israel wanted the Law – God said, “Here’s a hot grounder, see if you
can catch it.”  He hit the ball and they fumbled the ball.
            c.  M.R. Dehaan – Best way to raise your children is to shoot the grandmas
and the grandpas.  I like to scare my grandchildren.  He’d hide and when
they came by, he’d jump out and scream,  “The Big Bad Bear is going to
get you if you don’t watch out.”  He did that so much that they got
immune to it and they’d come to the house and say, “Hey, paw paw.”
He remembered his wife had a bear skin coat and it had been hanging in
the closet for 20 years.  He made himself a bear den out of the kitchen
table and called up his son and told him to bring the grandchildren over
to his house.  The grandchildren came into the house, yelling, “Hey paw
paw, the Big Bad Bear is going to get you if you don’t watch out.”  They
looked for paw paw everywhere but couldn’t find him.  Finally, they
came into the kitchen and looked under the Table and he jumped out at
them, bear skin and all.  It scared the living daylights of that kid.  M.R.
Dehaan had to pull the coat from off his head so the child could see who
it was.  He said the little boy came running and said, “You’re not that
old Big Bad Bear but you’re my sweet paw paw.”  When you get saved,
you look back at the law and you say, “You ain’t no big bear but you
caused me to run to my Sweet Jesus.”
    E.  A Sinner Redeemed – Vs. 33-35 – Man that is Picked Up.  I’m glad God
did not leave me where I was.
        1.  Samaritan – They were despised by the Jews.  Counted as dogs.  Jews had
absolutely no dealings with them.  Jesus was despised and rejected.
        2.   “As he journeyed” – His condension.
        3.  “Came where he was” – He’ll find you where you are.
        4.  “Brought him to an inn” – Natural for the sinner to go to church.  As
natural as a duck hunts water.  There’s healing in the church, protection in
            the church.
        5.   “Took care of him.”
        6.  Gave “two pence” – Two days wages.
        7.  Gave him to the host” – Holy Ghost – took care for nothing.  You didn’t
do anything to get lost.  Neither did you do  anything to get saved.  You
didn’t do anything to keep yourself saved.
CONCLUSION –   He was “beat up, passed up, picked up, fixed up and set up.”
